Senior Minister
Rev. Glenda Brayman
Welcome! |
|
And he appointed twelve, whom he also named apostles, to be with him, and to be sent out to proclaim the message, and to have authority to cast out demons.
(Mark 3:14-15, NRSV)
As we go into the season after Epiphany we will be learning what it means to be a disciple, one who is constantly learning. Learning is a life-time endeavor, something to be embraced and celebrated. The fact that we will be learning more about servant hood and service for our Lord is a blessing.
Too many times we get caught up in doing the same old thing the same old way and we get the same results. But God challenges us to evaluate and change as we learn more about God, more about God’s world, more about each other, and more about living in community.
To learn is to grow and I look forward to learning and growing with you this year. I look forward to leading you in new directions but also in celebrating the rich history of the Venice-Nokomis United Methodist Church.
Over the next year, a group of dedicated disciples will be listening, learning, and participating in the “New Realities” program. The program is sponsored by the Conference and is a tool to help us seek and understand God’s vision for this beautiful, Spirit-filled church.
This is a vital church in the Body of Christ, and we want to honor who we are, but also discover God’s purpose and plan for us in our community. When Jesus invites us to be disciples, he invites us to learn with the Master. Therefore, all that we do will be based on our Wesleyan roots of examining our direction based on Scripture, Reason, Tradition, and Experience.
If you have any ideas or comments that you would like to share with me, my door is open. I look forward to our learning, growing, and serving together.
In Christ,
Pastor Glenda |

"Can you hear me now?" Our Boy Scout Troop 1001 is collecting old cell phones that are no longer needed and are just lying around the house. There is a large box just inside the entrance to Fellowship Hall into which you can drop your old phones. Again, there is no need for the phone to be working or even to have a battery. Just drop them into the box. No chargers or other attachments, please...just the phones. Thanks in advance for your support. |
CALLING ALL QUILTERS
The quilting group has resumed its regular schedule. Their next meeting date is February 17th. The group meets the first and third Wednesday of the month from
10:00 AM
to
2:00 PM
in Fellowship Hall. If you wish to join us, BRING YOUR LUNCH. This ministry provides quilts for anyone that might be going through times of need, as well as, quilts for giving thanks. The quilt becomes a part of the recipient's home, as do the prayers that go with the quilt - the prayers signified by the knots that we tie on the quilt during our times of prayer. If you know of someone in need of a prayer quilt, please call Barbara Plough at 488-5063.
Giving a quilt is a special way to let someone know that they are loved. |

FLOWERS FOR THE SANCTUARY

These may be done in honor or memory of a loved one, a wedding anniversary, birthday, ect. Call the Church Office and see if the date you want is available. This is another way to help lower the expenses of the Church. If a date isn't reserved then the Church must pay for the flowers that day. |

2. Put a monetary donation in the box in the narthex.
3. Use a pew envelope and mark it “Food Pantry” and place it in the offering plate. |

GOD'S RAINBOW OF LOVE AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM |
We are back in full swing after the holidays. . . the children are studying the book of Daniel and how he and his friends remained faithful and true to God in the face of adversity. We will learn how we too can be true lovers & believers of God through the hard times in our lives. As ususal we will do crafts, sing songs and play games that reinforce what we are learning. It promises to be an exciting and fun study.
Please continue to pray for the children and their families on a daily basis.

MUSIC MINSTRY
NEWS FROM LINDA PETERSON
Organ Update
We have much good news in this new year. By the time you receive this, our organ rebuild should be totally finished. The last piece was the harp stop which, rather than pipes, is constructed like a xylophone, with hammers that strike the notes. This had to be taken to the shop in Ft. Lauderdale and totally rebuilt (and a large percentage of the organ pipes had to be removed to take it out, then replaced).
Organ Dedication Concert Series
Next year we will have a dedicatory concert series to celebrate the organ rebuild. I am forming a committee to help me with this series, both with publicity and with opinions as to what form the concerts should take (traditional organ concerts or something more original), when is the best time for the concerts, etc. Anyone who would like to be on this committee should contact me. You don't need to be knowledgeable about organs, only about what you think would be most inspirational for the people who would attend the concerts.
Palm Sunday Cantata
Another newsworthy item is that the Sanctuary Choir is beginning work on a cantata to be presented on Palm (Passion) Sunday. It will be based on the passion according to Mark and will consist of anthems in our library which have either not been sung yet or only sung once or twice. The handbells and flute will also be prominently featured in this work. It will start with the entrance into Jerusalem and end with the body being laid in the tomb, with music and scripture alternating as in the Christmas cantata. Anyone who would like to sing in the cantata is welcome to join us.
Rehearsals will be most Thursdays from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. It would also be a good time for anyone who would like to sing in the choir on Sundays to check it out. Rehearsals for the Sunday services are at 9:00 on Sunday mornings.

A warm thank you to all of you who volunteered to ring the Salvation Army bells at Publix this Christmas season. SPONORING NEW MEMBERS
If you know of anyone that might be interested in becoming part of our church family, we are building a team of volunteers to sponsor new members. For anyone wishing to help with this welcoming ministry, please call Barbara Southall, new member chairman, at 488-4137. |
YOUR INVITATION TO BECOME A MEMBER OF VNUMC
In our United Methoidst tradition, people can join as either Full Members of this United Methodist congregation or they can join as Associate Members, enabling our seasonal residents to retain official memberships in both their summer and winter congregations. If you would like further information, please call the Chruch Office at 488-4137. |
PRAYER QUILT MINISTRY
From time to time, Pastor McWhinnie will be presenting at the altar a new quilt made by our Quilters with a particular recipient in mind. Members of the congregation will be invited to come to the altar to tie a knot in the quilt and utter a prayer in behalf of the intended receiver. It is believed that these prayers will then be literally bound into the fabric of the quilt as the knots are tied, uniting the givers and receivers in a bond between all the children of God. |
PRAYERS FOR OUR MILITARY
In honor of our active duty military a bulletin board, located in the breezeway next to the Sanctuary, is available on which you can display a picture (in or out of uniform) and a brief description of your family member or friend. The picture should be no larger than a 4 x 6. Please give the name, rank, and location of deployment. Let's stand behind our men and women, pray for them and support their dedication to our country. Pictures may be sent to or brought to Rita Labadie or the Church Office.

PRESCHOOL NEWS
A New Year and a new beginning! We are looking forward to some great events this year and also to the daily opportunities we have to make a difference in each child's life.
We will soon be assessed by the Look for the Stars and Early Learning Coalition, who makes sure that preschools are meeting specific state requirements. We have been a part of this program for 5 years and we are consistently a 4+ out of 5. They look at the materials, environment, teacher/child interactions, curriculum, and all of the administrative and professional development requirements. We are proud of our teachers who annually get at least 24 hours of continuing education, making sure we are being the best possible staff!
Our annual HEART HEALTHY FUN WALK will be SATURDAY, FEB. 25TH . We are already getting many great prizes for our silent auction and our kids "Give-Away". Last year we had 215 walkers and raised $7,000. These funds help us to keep tuition as low as possible to families, while keeping our quality as high as possible with an educated and long term staff of teachers. We sincerely hope you will register to walk with us and stay for the great prizes and fellowship with the preschool families. If you have a business, or are willing to ask a business for a donation - each one who donates at least $25 will have their name on our beautiful T-shirts that everyone receives when they register to walk. Names will also be listed on our Sponsor Page of our web page www.vnumccc.org
WALKING HAND IN HAND FOR A HEALTHY HEART is our theme this year!
ONGOING DAIRY QUEEN FUNDRAISER
Dairy Queen continues to support our preschool by providing discounted lunches for the students and our monthly Dairy Queen nights. Our DQ nights are scheduled for the 1st TUESDAY
of every month from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM. We receive 10% of all proceeds from the purchases from people for those 3 hours. Many thanks to those "REGULARS" at DQ!
God
Bless,

EVERY MONDAY @ 7:00 A.M. Afterwards, for those who wish, there are opportunities to participate in various activities that maintain and beautify our church and advance our outreach into the community. A congenial and rewarding start to the week. Come and share with us.

ALUMINUM CANS NEEDED - CANS WONDERFUL CANS
When you bring in your aluminum cans for our can crushers, you help not only keep a cleaner environment, but also help many local charities. And, the groups supported through the proceeds of the can project need our help more than ever during these difficult financial times. The entire income from the recycling sale of the aluminum is distributed to these hard-pressed local and national charities. Remember, at about 31 cans to the pound, that’s a lot of cans!
So, please don’t slack off now. Bring in your aluminum cans, your condo group’s cans, and that partying neighbor’s cans. As always, we’ll do the rest.
The UMM Aluminun Can Crushing Crew thanks you for your continuing enthusiastic response to this endeavor. As a resultof this ongoing project, the proceeds of $1,422.92 during 2011 have been evenly divided ($237.15 each) among the following organizations: The Salvation Army, UMCOR, Boy Scouts, South couty Food Pantry, Meals on Wheels, and Alzheimer's Association.
At 31 cans per pound and aluminum at 57 to 71 cents per pound - well, that's a lot of cans (we'll let you do the math!). The crushers are counting on you to keep on hauling cans to our collection areas and to help us to maintain a cleaner environment along with supporting these community and national charities.

WHAT IS A CIRCLE?
We'll give you a hint. There are six Circles at Venice-Nokomis UMC which are a part of the VNUMC United Methodist Women. Each circle is a group of women who meet once a month September through June to carry out the Mission of the United Methodist Women.
What is the mission of the United Methodist Women?
*To know God...To experience freedom as whole persons through Jesus Christ
*To develop a creative supportive fellowship...to expand concepts of mission through global ministries of the church.
At Circle Meetings devotions are given, a program presented, and refreshments served. Members give that "extra mile" of giving by pledging money for the women, youth, and children missions around the world. Also project money is collected to help ourl ocal charities in the community such as South County Food Pantry, Preschool scholarships, Agape Flights, UMCOR, Shelter Box, Family in Need and the Youth fund.
The UMW is open to any and all women...Interested? Questions? Call Phyliss Green at 480-0153.

NEW BEGINNINGS, FARMINGTON, NEW MEXICO
United Methodist Women
Children (boys and girls who live in the shelter) are in need of winter clothes. We only send NEW clothing purchased or hand made. We continue with knitting of scarves, gloves, hats, etc. as they are saved for the Fall & Winter. How excited the children were to receive their “very own” quilt from our church quilters. |
HAVE FUN - JOIN A SEWING CIRCLE
Get out those machines stored in your closets. You don't have a sewing machine? That's OK. You can't sew? That's OK, too. You can cut with scissors and do basting with a thread? That will work just fine. Alice Hays, the "whiz seamstress" will help us with all we need to know. Our first project will be to make spring clothing for our boys and girls on the Navajo Reservation. Sign up in the Church Office if interested. |
WELCOME BANNERS
In an effort to reach the community we would like to purchase some Welcome Banners to hang outside the church to let them know we are a welcoming congregation. Recently a congregant’s mother died and the congregant asked that all the memorial donations that come in be used toward the purchase of these banners. If you would like to give a memorial contribution for a loved one and have it used specifically toward the purchase of these banners you may use a pew envelope and mark it “Welcome Banners” with the memorial information included. Any donations that come in specifically for the banners will be listed in the memorial area of our monthly newsletter. |
YOUTH GROUP
We have been really busy since Christmas! Exams are now behind us and a new half year begins.
We decided to celebrate by going to Winter Jam, a night of Christian Concerts by ten different bands and artists. The event was held at the Tampa Bay Times Forum. Saturday January 14th thirteen of us went but almost didn’t get there in time to get in! The Crosstown Expressway was closed for construction and we were stuck in traffic for a long time. Thank goodness one of our chaperones, Dan Heim, knew his way around and was able to take us through a short cut. We were some of the very last of 20,000 people that were able to attend. Unfortunately, there were hundreds that were turned away due to lack of seating and safety issues.
It was a night of fantastic music and speakers who praised and glorified our Lord and Savior. It was so wonderful to see so many young people gathered for Christian fellowship.
We arrived home at midnight, but everyone made it to church on Sunday!!!
Please pray daily for our young people and their families.
In His Service, Robin Deegan |
