SEPTEMBER SERMONS
At the heart of the Christian Gospel is the ministry of Divine Love.
We experience this love through the life of Christ and through the Presence of God's Spirit. And because we are loved, we then share that Christian love with others.
Throughout September, we will be exploring the ministry of both love and being loved, and these two dimensions are intertwined.
Sept. 5th: The Loving Touch
Sept. 12th: Christian Love is an Honest Confession
Sept. 19th: Christian Love is a Healig Presence
Sept. 26th: Christian Love is a Hopeful Vision
To love more fully, to love more freely, to love more faithfully, we shall become known in this community as a people who somehow have learned to be love with the love with Christ.
Proud to be your Pastor,
Rev. Jim McWhinnie |
WRITTEN COPIES OF LAST WEEK'S MESSAGE
Rev. McWhinnie's sermons are available in the Narthex. If we run out of copies, please leave your name and address and we will mail one to you. |
HELP US KEEP INFORMED
You can help us with our care of our hospitalized loved ones. If you know of someone who is in the hospital please let the Church Office know. We do not always receive word. We want to bring the love of the Lord and the Church family to them.

MINISTRY TO OUR HOMEBOUND
We are a Church that believes in caring for our Church Family, from the newborn baby to our loved ones no longer able to attend service. Our dream is that everyone will be surrounded by the love of Christ.
We are taking steps to provide better care for our homebound friends. To provide deeper care, we are bringing on board as our part-time Minister of Visitation, Reverend George Abosamra (Ah-bow-sahm-rah). I am guessing I will call him Reverend George! He is a retired United Methoidst Pastor and former District Superintendent in the New England Conference. Reverend Abosamra and I will be sharing in our visitation with our homebound.
Along with our pastoral visitation, our homebound folks will also have a lay friend from the Church. Under the leadership of Donna Naylor, we are organizing a team of Care Visitors. They will be bringing to our homebound loved ones a bit of love and a bit of news from their congregation. If you would like to share some sunshine and some grace, give Donna Naylor a call.
I also fear we may have lost track of a few of our Church loved ones who are homebound. Please call the Church office if you think of a Church member who can no longer get to Sunday services.
Caring for our loved ones,
Reverend Jim McWhinnie |

OLD CELL PHONES WANTED
"Can you hear me now?" Our Boy Scout Troop 1001 is collecting old cell phones that are no longer needed and are just lying around the house. There is a large box just inside the entrance to Fellowship Hall into which you can drop your old phones. Again, there is no need for the phone to be working or even to have a battery. Just drop them into the box. No chargers or other attachments, please...just the phones. Thanks in advance for your support. |
CALLING ALL QUILTERS
The quilting group has resumed its regular schedule. Their next meeting date is February 17th. The group meets the first and third Wednesday of the month from
10:00 AM
to
2:00 PM
in Fellowship Hall. If you wish to join us, BRING YOUR LUNCH. This ministry provides quilts for anyone that might be going through times of need, as well as, quilts for giving thanks. The quilt becomes a part of the recipient's home, as do the prayers that go with the quilt - the prayers signified by the knots that we tie on the quilt during our times of prayer. If you know of someone in need of a prayer quilt, please call Barbara Plough at 488-5063.
Giving a quilt is a special way to let someone know that they are loved. |
CARE GRAMS
During Coffee Hour, please sign the Care Grams whether you know the recipient or not. This is just a little way we can let the ill know that they
are not forgotten and it will lift their spirits. |
CEMETERY NEWS
The Jesse Knight Cemetery Committee would like to invite you to be a part of the cemetery committee. They meet the first Wednesday of every month at 9:00 a.m. at the cemetery on Colonia Lane. They meet every Wednesday morning at 7:15 - 8:30 a.m. to help maintain the cemetery grounds. This is a wonderful group of dedicated people and would welcome you to become a part of this very worthwhile mission of the church. |
CHILDREN'S CHURCH
The children in children’s church have been bringing in offering all summer for the Heifer Project. With all the money turned in and counted, I have exciting news!!! We had a goal of purchasing a Llama, we met that goal and had enough left over to purchase a flock of chicks and a hive of bees! We were so excited to know that we are able to help people somewhere in the world have a better life.
We now are saving for HOOI (Homeless Orphan Outreach Inc. in the Dominican Republic). It is wonderful to teach children about the importance of Mission Outreach.

E.P.I.C. PUPPET TEAM
We are doing great. The new puppeteers are truly committed. The Senior puppeteers are so wonderful in mentoring. Chris Greene, Bev Miller and I are so proud of our team. Travis Rose is invaluable as sound man and Millie Rose is there every week to help in every way. This is a wonderful outreach ministry. In His Service, Robin Deegan |
FLOWERS FOR THE SANCTUARY
Every Sunday you have an opportunity to provide flowers for the Worship Services. The cost is $35.00 for the two altar arrangements and $17.50 for a chancel arrangement. These may be done in honor or memory of a loved one, a wedding anniversary, birthday, ect. Call the Church Office and see if the date you want is available. This is another way to help lower the expenses of the Church. If a date isn't reserved then the Church must pay for the flowers that day. |
FOOD PANTRY
Please continue to bring your non-perishable foods to Church on Sunday or drop them off in the Church Office during the week. There is an ongoing need for non perishable foods to replenish the supply at the local South County Food Pantry.
How can you help?
1. Bring non-perishable items to church with you on Sunday.
2. Put a monetary donation in the box in the narthex.
3. Use a pew envelope and mark it “Food Pantry” and place it in the offering plate. |

MISSIONARY KILLED IN AFGHANISTAN
As your Pastor, it is my difficult duty to report to you that one of OUR missionaries was killed in missionary service in Afghanistan. Recently Dan and his wife, Seija, came and shared at our Church. Their faithfulness and compassion will long be remembered by the people of Afghanistan and by the people of the Florida Conference of the United Methodist Church.
Daniel Terry, 64, a United Methodist Laymen, was killed August 5 in Afghanstan. Dan had been working in Afghanistan since the 1970's. He was with a group of 10 persons killed last Friday as they were returning to Kabul from an eye care clinic. Dan had been working with the people of Afghanistan under the auspices of the United Methodist General Board of Global Ministries for more than 30 years. He devoted his life to the Afghan people and warmly and openly shared his passion and commitment ot their needs with churches and congregations throughtou the Florida Conference. Dan's wife, Seija, is a nurse and they have three daughters and one grandchild. |
MUSIC MINSTRY
NEWS FROM LINDA PETERSON
Our rebuilt organ console will be returned to us the week of August 9! It will not be connected immediately to the pipes, however. The week of August 23rd, the organ builders will return and begin the new wiring which will connect the rebuilt console to the pipes. Because of the extensive scope of the wiring, we will be organ-less for two Sundays - August 29th and September 5th. When it is connected, we will have full use of the pipes such as they are, and we will also have a midi, which will be hugely valuable in allowing us to us to add more contemporary praise music to our already excellent mix of musical styles (of course we’ll keep the various styles we have now).
After this, we will enter Phase 2, which is our work on the pipes. They are in considerably better shape than the console was, but some have fallen from their places and others need repairing. We also have ciphers (notes that play when they shouldn’t) due to air leaks, and dead notes caused by pipes being out of place or broken.
Many thanks to Lee Hoag for organizing a series of bake sales to help raise money for Phase 2! The first, in July, was a great success. The bake sales will continue on the 2nd Sunday of each month.
"The Sweet By and By”
Sanford Bennett, a pharmacist in Elkhorn, Wisconsin, regularly filled prescriptions for Joseph Webster for anti-depressants. In time, however, he found he could cheer him up by giving him music to work on. One day, when Webster walked into the pharmacy looking sad, Bennett asked him what was wrong. Webster replied, “It is no matter; it will be all right by and by.” Bennett immediately sat down and wrote the words of a song. Webster used a violin Bennett had in the store to improvise a melody, and both men sang the song as customers listened. One of the customers said, “That hymn is immortal,” and he was right!

HELP MAKE NEW PIPES FOR OUR ORGAN MORE THAN A "PIPE" DREAM COFFEE HOUR BAKE SALE EVERY 2nd SUNDAY
September 12
October 10
November 14
The second stage of our Pipe Organ renovation is to actually work on the pipes themselves. It is going to cost $50,000 to get them up to snuff. To that end we have a group of people that have volunteered to make some of the most delicious home baked goodies you will ever sink your teeth into.
The total received on Sunday, July 11 from our FIRST Bake Sale was $287.00. Some of you were unable to purchase baked items due to them having nuts...This will be remedied in August!
Make sure to mark your calendars for the above dates, bring some extra money to help with the pipes on the organ and go home with your dessert for lunch or dinner - Your neighbors would like some home baked goodies too! |
SPONORING NEW MEMBERS
If you know of anyone that might be interested in becoming part of our church family, we are building a team of volunteers to sponsor new members. For anyone wishing to help with this welcoming ministry, please call Barbara Southall, new member chairman, at 488-4137. |
YOUR INVITATION TO BECOME A MEMBER OF VNUMC
In our United Methoidst tradition, people can join as either Full Members of this United Methodist congregation or they can join as Associate Members, enabling our seasonal residents to retain official memberships in both their summer and winter congregations. If you would like further information, please call the Chruch Office at 488-4137. |
PRAYER QUILT MINISTRY
From time to time, Pastor McWhinnie will be presenting at the altar a new quilt made by our Quilters with a particular recipient in mind. Members of the congregation will be invited to come to the altar to tie a knot in the quilt and utter a prayer in behalf of the intended receiver. It is believed that these prayers will then be literally bound into the fabric of the quilt as the knots are tied, uniting the givers and receivers in a bond between all the children of God. |
PRAYERS FOR OUR MILITARY
In honor of our active duty military a bulletin board, located in the breezeway next to the Sanctuary, is available on which you can display a picture (in or out of uniform) and a brief description of your family member or friend. The picture should be no larger than a 4 x 6. Please give the name, rank, and location of deployment. Let's stand behind our men and women, pray for them and support their dedication to our country. Pictures may be sent to or brought to Rita Labadie or the Church Office. |

PRAYER FOR OUR TROOPS
"Lord, hold our troops in your loving hands. Protect them as they protect us. Bless them and their families for the selfless acts they perform for us in our time of need. I ask this in the name of Jesus, our Lord and Savior. Amen

A PRAYER FOR THE GULF OF MEXICO
We pray today for the preservation of our natural environment, especially the Gulf of Mexico and the lands and water it touches:
Guide those who labor to contain the oil that endangers the creatures of sea and land; Strengthen those who work to protect them; Have mercy on those whose livelihoods will suffer; Forgive us for our carelessness in using the resources of nature, and give us wisdom adn reverence so to manange them in the future, that no one may suffer from our abuse of them, and that generations yet to come may continue to praise you for your bounty; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen |
PRESCHOOL NEWS
We have three classes of students who are enjoying the summer activities that the teachers have planned. We go to the water fountains in downtown Venice twice a week to cool off and once a week, in our "music" time, we find great songs to sing that are connected to our weekly themes. We have so many great patriotic songs that the children know and we sang some of them when we visited the Patriots Park for a picnic and to look at all the beautiful flags.
Farming, Carnivals and The Great Outdoors are the weekly topics we will be talking about in July. We'll be visiting Publix to see what foods come directly from a farm, we'll be playing carnival games and "camp" in tents & go on nature hunts. If you have something interesting to share with our students, please let us know (484-4415).
Summer is passing quickly and soon we will begin our new school year
( August 23rd). We are sprucing up our classrooms to get them ready for our new students as we will begin our 28th year.
God Bless, Barbara Zier

TRUSTEE HAPPENINGS
One of our major energy saving projects has been completed. The Choir Room now has a drywall ceiling built under the old porous acoustical ceiling. No longer will hot, stale air filter down through the ceiling. I knew we had accomplished some of our goals when Jesse Ellington asked, “How did you get rid of the musty smell?” Next, we will make similar changes to our puppet room. Robin is now planning how to temporarily move the puppets to Fellowship Hall.
The Men’s Fellowship is continuing lawn and plant maintenance. Fertilizing and ant control are an ongoing project. Thanks to all the men who give their time and effort. |
Fundraisers
ALUMINUM CANS NEEDED
Our can crusher is now capable of crushing twice as many cans as before, with no breakdowns. We need MORE, MORE, MORE cans. Please continue to bring your aluminum cans, your neighbors cans and your friends’ cans to be recycled by the UMM. There are receptacles behind fellowship hall and by the breezeway next to the blacktop parking lot. Your continued support is truly appreciated! Medical equipment available if needed: wheelchairs, walkers, etc. - call the Church Office.
UPCOMING UMM ACTIVITIES
EVERY MONDAY @ 7:00 A.M. - Come out and enjoy the fellowship, program, and the summertime breakfast menu of orange juice, donuts, and coffee. Then stay and help with projects that beautify our church and advance our outreach into the community. |
HAVE FUN - JOIN A SEWING CIRCLE
Get out those machines stored in your closets. You don't have a sewing machine? That's OK. You can't sew? That's OK, too. You can cut with scissors and do basting with a thread? That will work just fine. Alice Hays, the "whiz seamstress" will help us with all we need to know. Our first project will be to make spring clothing for our boys and girls on the Navajo Reservation. Sign up in the Church Office if interested. |
YOUTH GROUP
News from our Summer Youth Worker
Hello, everyone. This is just a quick update about the Venice-Nokomis United Methodist Church Youth Group for the Summer 2010. We’ve been focusing a lot on finding ways to help others in need. We, as a youth group, have been sponsoring a 13-year-old boy from Honduras named David Zepeda, and we are currently having a contest to see which team can raise the most money to help David. I love that the kids are excited to help others, and I am also excited about our other upcoming events.
Love, Erika Auxier |
