MISSION TRIP
TO LOUISIANA
VENICE-NOKOMIS UMC SUMMER MISSION PROJECT
Dulac Community Center & Clanton Chapel UMC
July 7 - 16, 2006
Who lives in the Bayous? People! Beautiful people! The people of
The United Houma
Nation,
a tribe of American Indians. They are a culture that most of the
people within
our country
know very little about. The people of the Houma Nation came to
these
lands of Louisiana thousands of years ago. Their pastor,
Kirby Veret’ the only Houma
Indian, United Methodist
Clergy will have much to share with you.
This will be a fantastic experience for everyone, younger and
older, who choose to
participate. You will be received with
gracious hospitality. Our church families are
encouraged to
bring
their young children so that families can be in mission
together.
Your children will share a
great experience attending Vacation Church School all day
and
will be developing new
friendships with the children living in the Bayous.
Every person has a gift, a talent or a skills they can share.
YOU ARE NEEDED! You will
work hard!!! You will participate in the VCS or in one of the
Work Teams repairing buildings
at the community center, or working in the community. Much
damage still remains from
hurricanes Katrina & Rita. Much has already been accomplished by
other Volunteers in
Mission.
The Mission Committee of VNUMC has began a Mission Project
Start-Up Fund to help
with
the expense. They donated the first $1000. We thank Gerry Blair
and his committee
for
the "start-up fund." You are welcome to add to this at any time.
An organizational meeting will be scheduled the later part of
March. In the meantime
keep up-to-date reading the church bulletins and newsletters.

NEED FOR GLOVES AND
MITTENS
Adele Foutz, the executive director and missionary has received
the latest box of
supplies. She was excited about the addition
of mittens and gloves. She send her
grateful "THANK YOU."
Several women within our church have been knitting caps for the
children on the
Navajo Reservation. This ministry is done
through the Ann Mill UMW Circle. The caps
are sent to
the New Beginnings United Methodist Center in Farmington, New
Mexico.
From there they
are distributed, during the cold winter months, to and cherished
by hundreds of children
and youth living on the reservation.
It was the children who made the request for the mittens to
match their caps. So the
women have responded and the children
are enjoying them. If this is something you
would like to do
in your spare time it would be greatly appreciated.
You may choose also to purchase knitted gloves and/or mittens,
and they will be
distributed
with the caps. If you are interested in this project, please
leave the
gloves/mittens in the
church office to be sent with the caps.
The next shipment dates from Nokomis are: February 24 & March
10. |

Dear Lord,
Hold our troops in your loving hands. Protect them as
they protect us. Bless them and their families for the
selfless acts they perform for us in our time of need.
I ask this in the name of Jesus, our Lord and Savior.
Amen.

STEPHEN
MINISTRY
Stephen Ministry Training Class in Home Stretch
Our current training class for Stephen Ministers at
Venice-Nokomis
United Methodist
Church is nearing completion the end of this month,
with their
final session on April 27th emphasizing Jesus’ call to "follow
me".
They will be commissioned as Stephen Ministers
during our church services
on April 30th and will join our
current Stephen Ministers in
their ministry
to hurting people and those in crisis.
Your current Stephen Ministers have spent many hours ministering
to
hurting people in
our congregation and in our community. In addition to
you, the
congregation, we
currently have 36 members involved in Stephen
Ministry. This
includes our current
class of six trainees, eight Stephen Leaders
(including both
pastors), and 22 active
Stephen Ministers. These Stephen
Ministers are now caring for 25
individuals from our
church and community.
In addition, they and their Leaders have
met twice monthly
for continuing
education and supervision.
Please continue to keep this ministry in your thoughts and
prayers. The
above folks
are only able to help when you take an active part in the
referrals
process. If you
know of someone who might benefit from the distinctively
Christian care that our
Stephen Ministers can provide, or if you need care
yourself,
please call our Referrals
Coordinator, Diane Sharp (485-4245),
or one of the pastors.

SUNDAY SCHOOL UPDATE
Many of you enjoy
bringing your child(ren) to our Children’s Church and Puppet
Program on Sundays at 9:30 a.m.
We have Sunday School every week during the 11:00 worship
service. Each week the
children enjoy a lesson along with a story time and a simple
craft or coloring sheet.
This is a time your child will remember even as an adult. We
know that everyone’s
schedules are extremely busy, but try to plan an hour every
Sunday to give your
child(ren) the Christian foundation they need.
ADULT SUNDAY SCHOOL CLASS

Weekly topics include: Power Struggles, The Key to Discipline,
and How to Convey
Your Love to Your Child (at any age). Stop by the fellowship
hall at 10:30 to enjoy
some cookies and time of fellowship with others, drop off your
children at 10:45 in
room 9 for them to enjoy Children’s Church and then you can go
to your Sunday
School class. Take this opportunity to meet other parents with
the same interests
and concerns about their children. Please call Julie Thompson if
you have any

UNITED
METHODIST WOMEN
Four of our ladies, June Gurley, Betty Herscher, Lee Kahl &
Luella Lowe, will be attending
the UMW Assembly in Anaheim, CA - May 4-7 - please keep them in
your prayers.
Our March Unit Meeting program was given by Stephanie Meents
about her Mission Trip
to India. It was very interesting and enlightening. Stephanie
grew up in our church, was
a member of the UMYF and still attends when able. She and her
family moved to North
Port a couple years ago.
The Ladies that attended the Spiritual Day Apart in Sebring
reported that is was very
inspiring and meaningful.
STYLE SHOW FUNDRAISER - UPDATE
We had a great time at
the "Style Show" watching the lovely models model the clothes by
"Denise’s Latest Collection." Our models were Edwina Anthony,
Carroll Cook, Barbara Plough,
Nancy Potter and Barbara Price. We sold 132 tickets and cake for
a total of $540.00. A
BIG THANK YOU to those who baked the cakes that were served and
everyone enjoyed
choosing their own piece of cake. Also, THANKS to those who
donated door prizes - we
had over 40 door prizes to give away! I cannot forget to thank
those people who shopped
and bought clothes or jewelry that day because we will receive a
check for 10% of the
sales that day. It looks like we made a profit of $710 and this
money will be used for
UMW mission projects. Last, but not least, THANKS to Rita
Labadie and Luella Lowe for
cutting the cakes and all the other women who worked to make the
STYLE SHOW a
BIG success.

YOUTH GROUP
Our Youth have been busy during the Lenten Season. We can hardly
wait for Easter!
A few of us enjoyed a New Song Concert on Palm Sunday. They sang
"Arise My Love"
which never fails to bring tears and pounding hearts. It was a
great start to Holy Week.
Last week we filled many, many Easter Eggs for our upcoming Egg
Hunt. We will fill many
more eggs tonight. Friday night we are going to Wachula to the
"Story of Jesus." A
wonderful play with a cast of more than 100 and over 400
animals. This is a very
touching way to spend Good Friday night.
On Saturday the youth will be SUPER busy hiding a couple
thousand Easter Eggs for the Community Easter Egg Hunt.
We sponsored a Family Movie Night and showed The Chronicles of
Narnia. A beautiful
Christian based film. Fifty people joined in eating pizza and
enjoying the move. We hope
this is the first of many Family Movie nights! Please continue
to pray for our youth on
the downhill stretch of school.
In His Service, Robin Deegan |
