LAMP
The lamp is a symbol of the Word of God.
Psalm 119:105
Your word is a lamp to my feet
and a
light to my path. |
JERUSALEM CROSS
This cross is used as a symbol of
missionary outreach from Jerusalem
to the four corners of the earth. |

LAMB OF GOD
The lamb carrying the banner of victory
represents Christ's triumphant over death
and the grave. The lamb is often used as
a symbol of Christ.
John 1:29
Behold! The Lamb of God who takes
away the sin of the world! |

CHALICE, WHEAT, AND GRAPES
The most popular symbol for the sacrament of Holy Communion
is the chalice,
reminding us of the cup which our Lord took and blessed at the
Last Supper.
The
chalice symbolizes figuratively the bitterness of the suffering
Christ at
Gethsemane.
The grapes symbolize the wine of Holy Communion which
represents
the blood of
Christ. The vine leaves remind us of Jesus saying,
"I am the
vine, you are the branches"
in John 15:5. The wheat is used to
suggest the bounty of
earth and as a representation
of the bread which in
communion symbolizes the broken body of
Christ. This needlepoint kneeling
cushion is the
centerpiece on the base of our altar at Venice-Nokomis United
Methodist Church. |
GRADED CROSS
This is a Latin Cross on a base of three
steps from which it derives its name. The
steps represent in descending order,
Faith, Hope, and Charity.

ROSE
The rose is a symbol of love. It is
also used to represent the Nativity. |

TRIQUETRA
This design, consisting of three equal arcs, is a symbol of the
Holy Trinity.
The arcs
express eternity in their continuous form and
indivisibility in their
interweaving. The
center forms a triangle, the Trinity. |
|
DOGWOOD
The dogwood is a symbolism of the crucifixion.
Legend says the cross was made of dogwood,
a tree that grew very large in those days. After
the crucifixion, the legend states, God ordained
that its size should be stunted from then on.
The blossoms have a rust colored mark in
each of the four petals to represent the
wounds of the crucified Christ.
